I’ve selected some of my favourite and best broad spectrum SPF sunscreens that will provide you will long lasting protection from the sun, perfect for sensitive skin too! You absolutely should be wearing sunscreen all year round but it’s even more important to do so in the summer months. I previously blogged about looking after your skin in a heatwave here.

Best Budget Broad Spectrum SPF Sunscreen

In my previous blog post about sunscreen I linked to this very helpful article explaining what UVA/UVB is, what SPF means and more. It’s very much worth a look to keep you sun safe. I can’t give a better explanation than that article so I’ll just jump straight into my favourite sunscreens for the face (and also for wearing under makeup-I have suggestions for over makeup sunscreens below!)

Best Sunscreen for Sensitive/combination skin

If you have combination/oily skin (and sensitive too) I really recommend giving La Roche-Posay’s sun screens a go. One of the big problems a lot of people have with SPFs is that they can block pores and cause spots. Thankfully I haven’t experience that with La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50+SPF Shaka Fluid and it’s also why La Roche-Posay is one of the highest recommended sun screens from dermatologists. This is a light weight sunscreen that does not feel greasy in the slightest, absorbs nicely and leaves no white residue.

One of the best ways to get optimum results from sunscreen is to apply a good while before makeup, as a last step in your skincare routine. That’s just generally a good idea with skincare on the whole. That way it gives plenty of time for SPF to fully absorb without makeup interfering with its performance. La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50+ Shaka Fluid gives good UVA/UVB protection, is waterproof, sweat proof, and doesn’t sting the eyes. Easily one of my favourite sunscreens. In fact it should go in my most repurchased blog posts here.

 Best Sunscreen for Normal/Dry Skin

If you have drier skin or are looking for a cheaper alternative to La Roche-Posay I highly recommend Nivea Sun UV Face Q10 Anti-Age & Anti-Pigments 50 High UVA/UVB SPF Sunscreen. I think Nivea Sun is often over shadowed by the likes of La Roche-Posay which is a bit of a shame because these are excellent drugstore sunscreens. They offer super high SPF protection and are a great choice for sensitive skin types. Nivea Sun Q10 is thicker than the previous La Roche-Posay SPF and I think is more suited to normal or dry skin types. It’s a super hydrating sun screen that’s also packed full of skincare ingredients too.

Another brilliant high protection face sunscreen. (There is also a Shine Control version available that’s better suited to oilier skin types, again this is a brilliant budget sunscreen and looks amazing under makeup!).

High SPF Facial Mists

One of the easiest ways to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day while not ruining your makeup is by using a SPF facial spray. I’ve been using the new Garnier Amber Solaire Sensitive Advanced high 50 SPF Fair & Sensitive Hydrating Facial Mist. It’s broad spectrum ( provides UVA/UVB protection) and also protects against environmental damage. This is a light non-greasy spray that feels soothing and doesn’t ruin your makeup. I’m not sure I’d buy this again but I’m definitely keeping a high SPF facial mist in my sun care routine.

Best Sunscreen for Children and the Body

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the rest of your body too! I also have very sensitive skin on my body ( as does my son) so it can be a bit tricky getting a SPF that doesn’t irritate, feel sticky yet still provide high broad spectrum protection. I am really impressed with Solait Baby 50+ SPF Very High Protection Moisturising Sun Lotion! This sun screen has very high UVA/UVB protection making it perfect for your children too. It applies easily, absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a white residue. This is one of the best body sunscreens for sensitive skin I’ve tried and it’s super cheap too!

Nivea Sun also have a great sunscreen range for children. I’m always pleasantly surprised by just how good Nivea Sun products are!

How to Treat Sunburn

If you do get burned one of the best ways to treat sunburn is cooling, soothing aloe vera gel. Something like this aloe vera gel would work a treat. Calm your skin down by placing a cool cloth on the inflamed area and keep hydrated too! Be sun safe kids. (Read more on how to treat sunburn on the NHS site here).
