Facial oils are great for adding hydration and glow to your skin. I’ve tried LOTS of face oils over the years and below are some of the best face oils I’ve tried.  I know there’s a lot of competing information out there, but read on to find out why I think you should add a facial oil to your skincare routine for healthy glowing skin.

The Benefits of Facial Oil

I’ve always been a fan of face oils. I blogged about some of my favourite face oils here way back in 2015. But I wasn’t using them as regularly as I am now.

With my recent consistent and regular use of face oils in my skincare routine (you can see one of my older skincare routines here, it’s still good but I will be updating with my new routine soon!), I have really seen the amazing benefits of oils.

Some of the wonderful benefits of face oil:

They can help rebalance the skin. Oily skin can especially benefit from facial oils. Oils don’t make the skin more oily, in fact they very cleverly trick the skin into thinking it has enough oil and can stop the overproduction of sebum- this is what makes oily skin oily.

They can prevent acne. Many facial oils are high in fatty acids, and these fatty acids nourish the skin preventing acne breakouts. Read more about how some facial oils can prevent acne in this article from Lab Muffin.

Facial oils are packed with antioxidants. Many facial oils have high levels of Vitamin a (retinol), vitamin c, vitamin e and so on. Antioxidants do an amazing job at protecting and repairing the skin. Find out more about how amazing antioxidants are for the skin here.

They’re great for dry skin. Many face oils are packed with ingredients like omega oils, which are amazing for soothing dry skin. They’re also great if your skin is sensitive too.

They instantly give the skin a gorgeous dewy, natural glow. Face oils have many amazing long-term effects, however they can give the skin an instant pick-me-up too. If you want to make a matte foundation more dewy add a drop of facial oil and you’ll get a fresh, glowing base. Or add a tiny bit of oil to your cheek bones (like highlighter) for a natural glow.

Can Face Oil Replace Moisturiser?

This is entirely depends on how hydrated your skin already is. But let’s look at the differences between a regular moisturiser and a facial oil.

A facial oil is described as an occlusive. This means that it seals the moisture into your skin.

Whereas a regular cream/lotion moisturiser is a humectant. This means that the ingredients in the moisturiser pulls water into the skin. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, peptides and so on are humectants.

It’s recommended that you use both a humectant and an occlusive to get the most from your skincare. I have, however, really cut down on using a regular moisturiser. I sometimes use hyaluronic acid but in the main I’m only using a facial oil, on skin that is still slightly damp.

Which leads me on to….

Where to Apply Face Oil in Your Skincare Routine

Because we know facial oil is an occlusive it’s best to add it as the final stage of your skincare routine at night, or before SPF in the morning.

If you’re using a serum put that on, then a light lotion/cream moisturiser (if you’re using one), then add your facial oil to lock all the goodness in.

I like to put mine on after a shower, while there’s still a bit of steam in the room. I also apply hyaluronic acid this way- this gives it lots of moisture in the air to pull from.

Using a facial oil rich in skin-loving ingredients really makes a skincare routine so much easier.

I have this post on how to apply skincare if you’re looking for more information on creating a skincare routine.

The Best Natural Face Oils For Glowing Skin

Over the last several months I have been using two facial oils- one is completely finished and the second is nearing it’s end. I have also been using a booster oil. I’ll start with the oil that is completely finished.

I’ve also just started a new face oil too. I’ll pop it in at the end because it’s gorgeous so far.

Five Dot Botanics Deep Feed Nourishing Serum Review

Five Dot Botanics Deep Nourishing Serum (PR Sample) is a gorgeous, nourishing facial oil that is suitable for all skin types, but dry skins might especially love this oil.

Five Dot Botanics is a minimalist skincare brand based in the UK. They only include 5 powerful plant-based ingredients per product. All the ingredients are natural and carefully selected for their benefits to the skin.

Their Deep Nourishing Serum contains- Safflower seed oil (Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil)

Coffee (Coffea arabica (Coffee) Seed Oil)- this is a powerful antioxidant and can also smooth the skin as well as help it retain moisture.

Cacay nut oil- this has high levels of vitamin A,E & F. All help the skin to glow and keep healthy.

Amla fruit extract (Caryodendron orinocense (Kahai) nut oil)- rich in antioxidants, antibacterial and anti inflammatory ingredients, this is an amazing ingredients for all round skin health

Chamomile flower oil ( Anthemis nobilis (Chamomile) flower Oil)- this has a calming effect in the skin and the senses.

This is an amazing facial oil. It’s deeply nourishing on the skin and from the first time I used it my skin was glowing the next morning.

All you need are a couple drops in the evening (and morning if you like). Once applied (you can use Five Dot Botanics Brighten Up Balancing Mist before application for extra hydration) the oil sinks in easy, leaving comfortable skin.

I genuinely think this is one of the best skincare products I’ve tried. My skin loves the ingredients. My hormonal acne (I’m perimenopausal) was eased and my skin just looked really healthy. I can’t recommend Five Dot Botanics Deep Feed Nourishing Serum enough.

L’Aves Bright & Lift Facial Elixir Review

I started using L’Aves Bright & Lift Facial Elixir (PR SAMPLE) after I finished the Five Dot Botanics facial oil. L’Aves facial oil is another amazing natural skincare product. It’s an absolute pleasure to use, not only because of the texture but it smells incredible.

Evolve Organic Beauty Bio-Retinol + C Booster Review

Evolve Bio-Retinol + C Booster (PR SAMPLE) is another amazing product from Evolve. I’ve used lots of their products now and they are consistently good. One of my all time favourite cleansers is from Evolve.

Evolve’s booster can be added to your skincare or used on it’s own. I’ve been using it both ways. The ingredients are:

Caprylic/ capric Triglyceride*, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Fruit Oil*, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Fruit oil*, Bakuchiol, Tocopherol, Parfum (Naturally derived fragrance), Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil. *Ingredients from Organic farming.

This is a rich facial oil so you only need 1-2 drops. This is enough to cover the face and neck if you’re using it alone. As I would expect from Evolve this is a brilliant product. It brightens, soothes and nourishes the skin.

Like the other two facial oils I think you should give it a try. All the products above have been amazing. My skin can be prone to sensitivity, with the occasional hormonal breakout, and is showing some signs of ageing (I’m 44) and I have loved all the products.
