If you follow me on Instagram (come say hi here!) you may have seen the hashtag I started #councilhousecreative (please join in!) to raise visibility of people who are council tenants and more widely renting. Social class and renting are still very much taboo subjects on social media and especially Instagram. Working class people are largely invisible on there and there is still far too much stigma surrounding class issue. So anyway, I rent from my local council and I love my little home. And it does feel like a home. If you rent but don’t know how to make the space feel like your own or are unsure how to decorate a small space I have some interior design tips for you!

How to Decorate a Small Space on a Budget

I get a lot of my interior decor ideas from Pinterest and Instagram. I’m particularly drawn to Scandinavian style with its minimalist calmness. Having a small space and a very active 5 year old means that it isn’t always calm and serene, in fact it hardly ever is. BUT what I have managed to do is create little pockets of calm in an otherwise busy small living space. One of the easiest and budget friendly ways I’ve achieved this is by buying prints/posters from Juniqe. Another simple way to decorate a small space is by adding a mirror. This creates the illusion of more room plus it reflects light over the area instantly making it brighter.

I also like decorating in neutral natural colours as this keeps the area fresh and breezy. Darker colours can make a small space seem suffocating but of course that’s entirely down to personal taste!

Creating a Calm Interior

As well as adding prints to your rented space to make it feel like your own I love a tiny decorative accessory. I have a ridiculous amount of miniature vases that I decorate with flowers from my garden or that I’ve brought home with me. This is a super budget friendly way of making a rented space your own. Charity shops often have lovely little decorative pieces too that are not only purse-friendly but also add unique touches. Plants are another big favourite of mine. I think having plants and prints that you like in your home really enhances your well-being.

Making a Rented Space Your Own

I know that some private rented spaces don’t allow you to nail the wall but you could use something like No More Nails or another adhesive that won’t destroy walls so you can add your own touches. Your rented space will feel like your own home in no time!

Plus if you’re a blogger or Instagrammer having a little area that’s beautifully decorated can be the perfect space for taking product photos. I know that having a space that I love makes it easier for me to take photos that I actually like and has helped me get my photography and Instagram mojo back!
